Socialist Resistance is a current of Marxists organised around a monthly newspaper. We want to strengthen the fight for inclusive, creative and forward looking Marxist politics on the British left.
Our supporters are active in Respect, the Scottish Socialist Party, the Global justice and anti-imperialist movements and movements against climate change. Our objective is socialism. We don’t think it is possible to humanise capitalism - it has to be replaced with a new social and economic system.
Our central aims are:
- Building resistance to the international neo-liberal offensive of Bush, Blair and their allies. Sustaining the broadest possible movement in opposition to the war in
Iraq
is vital for the direction of politics for a long time to come. Capitalism creates war, environmental destruction, mass poverty and unemployment. Within the anti-war movement, Resistance supporters try to win activists to socialist ideas.
- To campaign to build a broad and democratic socialist party that can give a voice to those effectively disenfranchised by New Labour's right-wing agenda. Today this means building the Scottish Socialist Party and Respect
- The rebuilding of the fighting strength of the labour movement and democracy in the trade unions. Socialist Resistance members are active in their workplaces and trade unions fighting to defend and extend workers jobs and conditions through mass action. We are also active in trying to building fighting democratic broad lefts within our unions.
- Socialist Resistance stands in opposition to racism and Islamaphobia and to the oppression of women, lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people and disabled people. We believe that the most effective way to fight these forms of discrimination is through the coming together of those who directly experience them. .
- We are an internationalist current and stand in solidarity with those fighting national oppression across the globe. We have been particularly concerned with building solidarity with the revolutionary process in
Venezuela
and more generally with activists in
Latin America
and also of promoting the struggle of the Palestinian people. We also have strong links with socialists in other European countries who are active in or fighting to build broad democratic parties to the left of social democracy
